Cypress Cupressus sempervirens, was highly valued as an incense and medicine by early civilisations. The word sempervirens means ‘ever-living’ and the ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians dedicated the tree to their gods of the Underworld.
It is a good general tonic, especially of the nervous system. It sedates the nerve endings, but is uplifting to the spirit. It gently supports inner fortitude and stability. It can help ground us to stay focused on essential issues and not on superficial ones. It can bring focus and clarity to loss of direction.
Cypress oil is toning astringent, making it a good choice for congestive dysmenorrhea, heavy periods and ovarian cysts. Being hormonally active this oil is also effective for menopausal symptoms when oestrogen levels dip. (Note, this oil is sometimes considered oestrogenic and therefore is contra-indicated in oestrogen-dependent cancers and other high-oestrogen conditions).
