May Chang – Oil of Tranquillity

In last weeks post I listed an oil called May chang, and I wanted to talk a bit more about it today. May chang (Litsea cubeba) is known as ‘the oil of tranquillity’ and is said to aid physical relaxation and promote mental calm.

It has a wonderful citrussy fresh-lemony aroma, almost like lemon sherbets. It blends fantastically with citrus oils, and, because it is quite pungent, it can mask other oils that might be necessary in a blend but don’t smell quite as pleasant!

Historically, it would be blended with almond oil and used to fragrance the body before prayer or meditation. It is popular in Chinese medicine to treat asthma, aches, pains and chills.

It is an uplifting oil that promotes alertness and optimism, creating a sense of inner lightness when negativity has set in. A perfect oil for these hard winter months.
